Protestai po Dūmos rinkimų, aukščiausių vadovų rokiruotė ir naujos išrinktos valdžios kontroversiški sprendimai sutvirtinti valdžią buvo bene svarbiausi įvykiai, žymėję 2012 m. politinį gyvenimą Rusijoje. Dar 2011 m. pabaigoje iš karto po Dūmos rinkimų prasidėję protestai pirmą metų pusmetį įgavo pagreitį ir sugebėjo mobilizuoti iki tol neįsivaizduotą skaičių maskviečių. Jie parodė, kad jau bent keliuose didžiuosiuose miestuose formuojasi kritiškų ir, svarbiausia, aktyvių gyventojų dalis, nenorinti taikytis su esamo politinio elito dominavimu.
Kita vertus, pamatėme, kaip sunku išlaikyti mobilizuotas mases ir protestuotojus suburti į ilgalaikį socialinį judėjimą. Todėl jau antrą metų pusę aktyvizmo, taip pat optimizmo, kad kas nors gali keistis, banga nuslūgo. Tačiau socialinis aktyvumas išgąsdino Rusijos vadovus.
Padaryta ir pozityvių sprendimų – sugrąžinti gubernatorių rinkimai, rodant norą kiek atpalaiduoti stiprėjusią valdžios vertikalę. Tačiau kiti Rusijos valdžios veiksmai kėlė daugiau abejonių ir rodė ryžtą kovoti tiek su vidaus, tiek su išorės kritikais. Tarp tokių sprendimų reikia paminėti įstatymą dėl „užsienio agento“ statuso, kurį gavo nevyriausybinės organizacijos, gaunančios paramą iš užsienio, įstatymą dėl tėvynės išdavystės priėmimo, įvestas didžiules baimes protestuotojams, „Pussy Riot“ bylą ir pagaliau paskutinį „perliuką“ – „anti-Magnitskio įstatymą“, uždraudžiantį JAV piliečiams įvaikinti Rusijos vaikus. Tad 2012 m. Rusijoje matėme, kaip jos politinis elitas vis atkakliau ir griežčiau bando įrodyti ir parodyti savo valdžią tikėdamasis, kad per pastaruosius metus suaktyvėjusi gyventojų dalis sugrįš prie savo kasdienių rūpesčių ir nepasitenkinimą valdžia reikš tik privačiuose pokalbiuose.
Kalbėti apie Lietuvos ir Rusijos santykių lūžius 2012 m. yra sunku. Abi šalys demonstravo nesuderinamas pozicijas, iš esmės nebuvo jokio kalbėjimosi. Rusijos gyventojų sąmonėje Lietuva ir toliau lieka viena priešiškiausių valstybių. O Lietuvoje Rusija ir toliau išlieka pagrindiniu vidinių politinių kovų „baubu“ ir įrankiu. Šiame kontekste su intriga galime laukti 2013 m., kuriais pažadėtas dvišalių santykių „perkrovimas“. Turint mintyje jau įsigalėjusius stereotipus bei Rusijos nelankstumą ir nenusiteikimą daryti nuolaidų Lietuvai, pokyčius žadėjusių socialdemokratų laukia milžiniškas iššūkis.
